Sanremo 2011

Sanremo 2011 - 61º Festival di Sanremo

Yes, it's that time of the year! Time to listen to new Italian Pop songs!!!
As always, this is the song competition that Eurovision used as the inspiration for their song contest. It's four days of new songs and special appearances. Who will show up this year, J-Lo (nope, probably not, she was there last year), Mike Tyson (nope, probably not, he was there three years ago)? I am not sure, but I know that there are always some fun guests. If you've watched as many videos as we have, most of the line up is comprised of known and loved artists.

The performers are:
Patty Pravo
Moda'
Luca Madonia con Franco Battiato
Giusy Ferreri
La Crus
Anna Oxa
Tricarico
Nathalie
Al Bano
Luca Barbarossa e Raquel del Rosario
Roberto Vecchioni
Anna Tatangelo
Max Pezzali
Davide van de Sfroos

Now if that isn't exciting, I don't know what would be, when it comes to Italian pop!

Oh, and don't forget, the "Giovani". These up and comers are surely to please you. They include:
Serena Abrami
Roberto Amade'
Anansi
BTWINS
Gabriella Ferrone
Raphael Gualazzi
Marco Menichini
Micaela

Come watch with us February 15th through the 19th, if Italian tv does, what they say they are going to do!
Ciao!

Sanremo Festival at tidbit bistro

Sanremo Festival, 2010

The 60th Sanremo Festival is about to start! Eh, si', another year, another Sanremo Festival!

The Festival della canzone italiana (in English: Italian song festival) is a popular Italian song contest running since 1951 and held annually from the Teatro Ariston in the city of Sanremo. The 60th Sanremo Festival starts Tuesday, February 16, 2010. This festival is one of John's favorite events and the year, Antonella Clerici is hosting the five-night event that stops Italy for almost a week. What's also a coincidence, is that John has liked Antonella Clerici since the times of ‘La prova del Cuoco’, ‘Sposami subito’, and ‘Il treno dei desideri’. So, he's is really excited to see this year. We can tell you more about these TV shows if you want, but they are basically cheesy Italian reality shows. Our friends in Italy are kind of shocked by the fact that we know Antonella Clerici and have watched her shows; they think she is just a ‘smart blonde’.

But seriously, Sanremo Festival is the most important music event in Italy where there are two categories of contestants (the "Big" stars and the "Newcomers") vying for the grand prize. The Festival will last until Saturday February 20th. That's when we will know who the winners are.

We will show the Sanremo Festival at tidbit bistro on our screen, starting Tuesday February 16th. It is fun if you are interested in a real piece of Italian culture. Just one more reason to stop by and say hello!

What a shame, Italy!

I was upset when I read the news below about one of the songs competing at the Sanremo Festival this year:

"One of the most famous artists, 36-year-old Milan singer-songwriter Povia, has caused uproar among gay groups with his entry, Luca Was Gay, a song apparently about 'converting' gays to heterosexuality. Povia has previously come under fire over a magazine interview in which he declared that ''people aren't gay, they become gay on the basis of who they spend time with''. ''This song represents a wound for all gay people who are fighting against homophobia and ignorance in Italy,'' Arcigay President Aurelio Mancuso reiterated Monday . ''You don't change sexual orientation like a pair of shoes, it's rooted in our nature,'' he said, adding that five major gay right's groups will stage a protest in the city on Saturday. This year's artistic director and presenter Paolo Bonolis defended the song, saying that it did not ''take sides'' but simply ''told a story''. Povia meanwhile denied being homophobic and said he didn't ''give a damn'' about the gay rights groups' protest."

Will things in Italy ever change? It is a shame that this song was allowed to participate to the festival. This is one of those times that I am not proud of being Italian.

Sanremo Festival at tidbit bistro

The 59th edition of Italy's flagship Sanremo Festival begins tonight, (Feb. 17) and it will air for five nights on the main state-owned network Rai 1. In the festival competition, the 16 acts include Dolcenera, Patty Pravo and Francesco Renga, while the international guest performers include Katy Perry and Annie Lennox. This year the presenter and artistic director is Paolo Bonolis, who is one of Italy's most popular television personalities, even though his background is not particularly musical. Bonolis presented his first Sanremo in 2005 and returns after a four-year absence. More on billboard.biz

Sanremo Festival soon at tidbit

If you are interested in Italian culture, you may be interested in knowing something about the Sanremo Festival that is happening this week in Italy. Below is some information (from Wikipedia) about this contest. We will show this popular show on our screen at tidbit.

The Festival della canzone italiana (in English: Italian song festival) is a popular Italian song contest running since 1951 and held annually in the city of Sanremo. Usually referred to as Festival di Sanremo, or outside Italy as Sanremo Music Festival, it was the inspiration for the Eurovision Song Contest.
For years the Sanremo festival also served to select the Italian entry for the international song contest. The internationally famous song "Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu", also known as "Volare", was performed at this festival for the first time by
Domenico Modugno in 1958. The San Remo festival is so popular amongst Italians that it is often referred to simply as "Il Festival" (The Festival).

At the festival, singers must sing NEW songs in Italian (Italian dialects are also admitted even if it's a rare case). During the competition two winners are declared: a winner for the New Artists contest (where the participants usually are unknown or almost unknown singers) and a winner for the Champions contest (where the participants are famous singers). This Festival has made the history of Italian pop music. So many Italian singers "were born" at the Sanremo Festival: Andrea Bocelli, Laura Pausini, Eros Ramazzotti, Nek, Giorgia, Irene Grandi, and so on. Moreover some of the most beautiful Italian songs have been performed there.
