sustainability produce tip

Given that we’re in prime fresh and local fruit and vegetable season and that buying organic can be costly, it might help to know which organic products provide the greatest benefits and which products you can purchase non-organic without sacrificing the health and wellness advantages. The following lists are known as the Dirty Dozen and the Cleanest 12 and were compiled by the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org). These lists should be helpful when making your purchasing decisions:

12 Most Contaminated
Peaches
Apples
Sweet Bell Peppers
Celery
Nectarines
Strawberries
Cherries
Pears
Grapes (Imported)
Spinach
Lettuce
Potatoes

12 Least Contaminated
Onions
Avocado
Sweet Corn (Frozen)
Pineapples
Mango
Asparagus
Sweet Peas (Frozen)
Kiwi Fruit
Bananas
Cabbage
Broccoli
Papaya

You can also visit the website
www.organic.org where they have more information on this and other organic topics. There’s even a downloadable wallet-sized version of the lists that comes in handy at the grocery store, fruit and veggie stand, or farmer’s market.
Enjoy the season and happy fresh fruit and vegetable eating!!
